BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEW MEMBERS

The Club

Ashton & Lea Golf Club is a private members Club with 650 Member Places and up to 100 Junior Places.

Management

A 15 strong Board of Directors, elected from within the membership, manages the Club. Directors are elected for a term of three years and a third of the Board are eligible for re-election, each year. There are four Sub-Committees managing matters relating to Finance, Greens, Handicaps and House & Bar.

Officials

Honorary officers are the President, Lady President, Captain, Vice-Captain, Lady Captain and Lady Vice-Captain. It is courtesy to address them by their honorary title eg “Mr Captain” or “Lady Captain”. Do not be embarrassed using these titles: it is expected of you and disrespectful not to use these forms of address. Both the Seniors and Juniors each nominate a Captain, but they are not officers of the Club, even though they should be afforded similar respect and courtesy.

Standards of Conduct

The game of golf is traditionally one of respect for others, courtesy and consideration, and the Board of Directors are keen to maintain this tradition at Ashton & Lea. This does not mean being a “snob” or “toffee-nose”; it means showing courtesy and respect at all times to fellow members, visitors and employees of the Golf Club. Misconduct or misbehaviour is not acceptable under any circumstances.

Dress Rules

Reasonable standards of dress are necessary both on the course and in the Clubhouse. Only conventional golf clothing is acceptable on the course and you will be refused access to the course or asked to leave the course if you are improperly dressed.

On the Course

Courtesy and respect are also of paramount importance on the course. Other members, visitors and guests are entitled to enjoy the facilities at Ashton & Lea without distraction to having to contend with the inconsiderate, unreasonable conduct or behaviour of others.

A ball chute normally dictates the order of play on the first tee; however, your playing partners must all be present and ready for play before placing the ball in the chute. Priority should be given on the 1st Tee to the President, Lady President, Captain and Lady Captain.

Although play may commence on the 10th tee if the 9th hole is completely clear, “cutting in” at other points of the course is not allowed, other than during Winter months to enable all members to have reasonable access to the course at times of restricted daylight hours.

All members are expected to replace divots, repair pitch marks and to observe and respect the welfare of the golf course at all times. Dropping litter on the course will not be condoned at any time and members guilty of this offence will be strongly reprimanded. Litter bins are placed at various points on the course and members and visitors alike are expected to make full use of this facility.

Practicing or the playing of more than one golf ball on the course is strictly forbidden.

Competitions

Gents competitions, both Medal and Stableford are held at the weekends throughout the Summer playing season. Seniors and Ladies competitions are also held some weekdays. For most competitions you can select your own playing partners, subject to a requirement not to play with the same partners on more than three occasions. For “Major” competitions, your playing partners and tee times are drawn and may not be changed under any circumstances.

Social Events

The Clubhouse Bar and Catering facilities provided are for the benefits and enjoyment of all members, their guests and visitors. However, these also provide an essential source of income to the Club and contribute to the budget requirements each year including the setting of subscription rates and green fees. The full support of members helps maintain this source of income and keeping these rates to acceptable levels. Social events rely on the support of all members and in the past have proved to be excellent entertainment and value for money.

And Finally

The Club Professional, Mike Greenough, and the Executive Secretary, Mark Caunce, between them are present for most, if not all of the week. These are the two people who earn their living working in and knowing about golf. If you are in any doubt about anything please do hesitate to ask!

Above all, enjoy your membership of Ashton & Lea; it’s a great Club and the Board of Directors want to make it even greater. Get as much out of your membership as you possibly can, but remember also put as much in as you can too!
