April Newsletter
From the GM’s Office:
The season is upon us! The lush green fairways of Augusta on the BBC always
signify for me the start of the golfing calendar. The competitions are in
full flow with some great performances already including a hole in one by
Dean Winder. Good luck to you all this season and may the
golfing gods be kind!
Mick Wilson, Club
Captain
Hello everyone, firstly I would like to thank everyone for their good
wishes and offers of support for the coming year, I’m very proud to
be able to represent Ashton & Lea golf club as Captain and it will make
the year so much better knowing that I have the support of so many friends
within the club.
As the season gets underway I feel that there is an "upbeat
mood" around the clubhouse and a positive feel for the direction that
we are going in, I can promise you that the board and officers are confident
that the various changes going on will strengthen our position for the
future.
On a golfing front the course is looking excellent and the little touches
like the distance markers and the new flags etc have been well received.
Lady Captain & myself have a few events to run this year so keep an eye
on the notice boards, we hope you will be able to support us with these.
Finally I've had a word with the great referee in the sky
and he's promised me some good weather so I wish you all good health
and good golf this season.
Joanne
Startin,Lady Captain.
The ladies section has got off to a competitive start already and there
have been some great results in the medal competitions. The team events
have also started well with the bronze and handicap teams winning away
at Heysham and Fleetwood respectively. The Daily Mail foursomes
team also won the first round at home against Knott End. Good luck to
all the ladies teams for your next matches.
The ladies have two major comps
coming up. Lady Presidents Day was cancelled twice in 2008 due to bad
weather and this is being played on Saturday May 9th. Lady Vice Captain's
Day is a week later on Saturday 16th May. Good luck to Lady President,
June Banks and Lady Vice Captain, Jill Williamson. Here's hoping for some
good weather and good scores.
Barry
Piggott, Seniors Section Captain
The Seniors Section have also made a good start to their
season The first home and away fixture in the Ribble Valley League
against Fairhaven ended in success. The team won the first leg at home
4 games to 2 and the away game 3.5 to 2.5. The annual match
against Knott End for the Johnson Shield is currently half way
through. This Shield was first played for between the two Clubs in
1923. The Seniors Team visited Knott End recently and came away with a
creditable 8 - 4 win. Hopes are high for a home win to retain the Shield.
The photograph shows most of the team in front of the club house at Knott
End.

Juniors
The juniors got their season off to a great start with a 12-3 home
win over Shaw Hill Golf Club. One of the stars of the day was Tommy Horton
who won with a convincing 7&5 margin. Let’s hope the good form
continues.
Golf Course
The golf course has wintered well and with a bit more growth we should
see the greens returning to their usual high standard. Graham and his
team have completed the major winter projects and will now be concentrating
on providing the best conditions possible for you through the season.
Social

Nearly 60 people attended the club’s annual St Georges bash on the
18th April. The night was a great success with perhaps one of the best
entertainers the club has ever had. " I have been attending
club functions for almost 40 years and this is one of the very best
nights I have been to" said Peter Headingham Past Captain.
