From the GM’s Office:
It’s been a very busy month at the club with some
tremendous golf being played, Steve Roberts winning Howard Lythgoe’’
Vice Captains Day with a nett 61 must be the highlight. The Calvert was a
great success and for the first year in a few was full which I believe is a
testimony to the quality and reputation of the golf course. I would like to
thank the sponsors and particularly Ray Smith from Diageo who continues to
be a great supporter of the club also thanks to Ping Golf and Bridgestone
for their contribution.
Hopefully you will have received an email or seen
the posters advertising the “Introduce a member
offer”
Any full member who introduces a friend to the club who then takes up
full membership will receive £50 credit on their bar card as well as the
new member receiving £50 on their card. This offer starts on July 1st
2009 and will run till 30th September 2009.The current
joining fee is £250.00 and the membership fees are pro-rata till the end

Joanne Startin, Lady Captain.
A&L were proud to host the Lancashire Ladies Vets
prestigious Cecil Leach trophy on the 8th June. The ladies had a great day,
with wonderful weather and everyone who played was delighted with
everything about A&L. Complements were flowing about the course and the
hospitality. The competition was won by our own Dee Duxbury and Marina
Hardman, who made the most of the home advantage. Well done to Dee and
Marina

The ladies major competitions are well underway now.
Captain's Day for ladies was a huge success and was won by Olive Moore.
Thanks to our Captain for a great day.
I'm looking forward to Lady Captain's day for Juniors on
Saturday 27th June and to my Lady Captain's Days on the 9th and 11th July.
I hope the sun shines and that everyone enjoys the day. Good luck to
everyone.
Lastly, my Lady Captain's Day out this year is on 21st
July at Ashton in Makerfield. I'll have a full review in next month’s
edition.
Thanks,
Joanne (Lady Captain)
Barry Piggott, Seniors Section
Captain
The month of June was a somewhat strange one for the
Senior Section. There has been limited success in the leagues, after such
good starts, 2 home matches rained off and a further one having to be
re-scheduled when a team failed to turn up!!!
One rained-off match was bizarre.
The first four ball had just completed the 7th hole when it
started to rain. By the time they had reached the eighth green, it was
flooded as were most others around the course. Needless to say, match
abandoned. Our thanks to the Office for finding
spaces in a busy diary for the re-arranged matches and to the
Caterers, especially on the day of the abandoned match, for rushing through
the meal several hours ahead of the scheduled time.
The team of George Sams, Ron
Stamper and Norman Yates did the club proud in coming third (out of eight)
in the Fylde League annual team competition, the Len Hall Trophy. In the
individual placing, George Sams was second in the individual placings, the
winner having the home advantage of Fairhaven.
The Monday medal and Stableford
competitions continue to be well-supported. Thanks to all those that take
part, to the runners-up, but especially to the winners: Bill Bannister
(Stazicker Shield) and Chris Robertson (Millennium Cup). At the latter
event almost £100 was collected in support of the Poppy
Appeal.
JUNIORS
The junior section has a mixed month in the NLJGA league, we
started the month with a tremendous 15-0 victory at home to Lancaster G.C,
then came up against a very good Penwortham side and lost 9-6 at home. Paul
Green in singles and Stephen Nixon + Jack Winder in the pairs won both of
their games. I was happy to see the remaining three matches all push
their opponents to the last hole before losing 1 down. Our next match is
away to Heysham on Sunday 5th July.
Nine of our juniors have had their handicaps reduced on
general play for their outstanding golf over the past couple of months. Our
next competition is Lady Captains Day on Saturday 27th June. All juniors
are battling it out for six places for the Charity cup to be held at
Ashton&Lea in July, good luck to all juniors taking part. Finally it is
nice to see there are now 10 juniors who have reached 15 handicap or better
to play in gents’ competitions. Well done boys.
GOLF
COURSE
The feedback from the Calvert Trophy about the course was superb and
Graham and his team are maintaining the course to a very high level. Summer
staff is in place to help keep on top of the maintenance and the general
duties during the busy periods.
The greens committee along with Graham are busy looking at the winter
programme for 2009/10 with one of the main priorities the drainage, working
towards less closures, fewer trolley bans and to stay on the fairways
longer.
SOCIAL
The Thwaites night was a tremendous success and in fact a sell out!
Class Catering put on a great buffet and the entertainment from Darren
James was superb, thank you to everyone who supported the event. The next
club event will be the Murder Mystery Night on Friday 7th August
more details will follow shortly.
