From the GM’s Office:
I must start by
congratulating our Deputy Head Greenkeeper Max Hedingham and his
wife Jenny on the birth of their second child George, mother and baby are
doing well as are the proud grandparents Peter and Margaret.
Also congratulations
to Pat Horn who has been tearing up the courses in Florida, she has helped
her club win their league breaking the local rivals 9 year hold on the
title!

Mick
Wilson, Club Captain Well the season is well and truly underway now
and after the euphoric April sunshine we are now in the midst of the usual
summer showers and arctic winds….. Great eh? But undeterred by this our P
& D and Fylde teams are in great form with some good victories under
their belts already.
The bank holiday weekend
gave us some sunshine and we were pleased to welcome visitors and members
alike to our AM-AM and to Lady Captain and Captains mixed open, both events
were well supported with good scores winning each, thanks go to everyone
who entered and to our Handicaps committee for running these along with our
club professionals.
On a
personal note I would like to thank everyone who has put their names down
for my away day to Ulverston golf club on 3rd of July, I am
really looking forward it and I am sure that we will have a great day.
Lastly I wish you all well in the up & coming competitions especially the
majors, some of which will be followed by great entertainment, good luck.
Joanne Startin, Lady
Captain.
Finally we managed to play the 2008 Lady
Presidents day at the fourth time of asking! Thanks to all the ladies who
supported the event. We also had a great day for Jill Williamsons Lady
Vice Captains day the weather just about held out for
us.
The Lady Captain and Captains Mixed Open was
a great day and we raised a lot of money towards our charities, the
comments on the course from the visitors were very positive. As the Captain
has stated the season is now in full flow and hopefully we will have a
great season, we deserve one!!
Barry Piggott,
Seniors Section Captain
The League teams continue to have good
outcomes against other clubs. Recent matches have seen overall wins (home
and away) against Green Drive, Fairhaven and potentially Fleetwood. A draw
was achieved against Clitheroe. However, success is measured in many ways.
Win or lose the events are always conducted in the best of atmospheres. The
golf is naturally competitive with social aspects full of good
humour, 'intelligent conversation' and putting the world to
right!!
The Terry Waters Trophy medal was abandoned
following a torrential downpour. The greens were awash, there was a
distinct stream running down the 5th fairway and the ducks were having
a field day! This medal will now be played on Monday 17th
August.
Juniors

Will Kelly is pictured above with Dave Horn who sponsors
the Florida Trophy recieving his prize (Will is the taller one!!)
Will won the event with a very impressive net 67 in very windy
conditions.
Golf Course It’s been a
strange month of weather (as is becoming the norm!) 15 consecutive days of
rain followed by the hottest day of the year means Graham and his team are
experiencing an unprecedented amount of growth. The general feedback on the
course has been very positive and it should soon be at its peak for the
season.
Social One of the
clubs biggest events is just around the corner. On the 6th June the annual
Thwaites Golf Day will take place. Tickets are available from behind the
bar, friends and family are welcome. Top local performer Darren James will
be providing the entertainment in the evening.
Pro Shop- Press release 14th
May

Sky Sports golf pundit and former European Tour
Professional John Hawksworth (centre) was on hand to officially open
the new pro shop at Ashton and Lea Golf Club. John who is a member of the
club and long term friend of Club Professional Mike Greenough was more
than delighted to mark this initiative by the club. In a move that many
clubs may follow Ashton and Lea Golf Club are now managing and stocking the
shop and employing a team of PGA Professionals to run the
outlet.
Mike Greenough (right) has been the
clubs professional for 16 years and is looking forward to the new
challenge. “I think Ashton and Lea Golf Club are leading the way with
this move and I'm sure that the club and its members will reap the
benefits” commented Mike. “We are very lucky to have someone as
experienced as Mike on board and along with Daniel Clark the assistant
professional we have a great team” said Simon Plumb the clubs general
manager who is himself a PGA Professional
golfer.
The shop will be carrying all the major
brands and have joined the alliance buying group so that members and guests
can purchase merchandise at very competitive
prices.
And finally.. I
have received many positive comments about the Pro Shop which are
very much appreciated. We have managed to find a a solution to the prize
voucher issue. Any member who wins a voucher in a competition will be
able to add this to an account in the shop that they can
spend at their leisure on golf equipment. A separate
card will be used that will remain in the
shop, unfortunately we are unable to add prize winnings to your
main account as this is against the amateur status rules as laid down
by the R&A.
If you require any further clarification on
this please do not hesitate to contact either Mike or Myself.
Regards
Simon Plumb General
Manager
