From the GM’s Office:
Early in the month we became the
latest victims of a very organised team of criminals who broke into
numerous lockers and stole high valued golf equipment. We are looking
closely at our security systems to try and avoid any repeat of this
unfortunate incident.
On a lighter note, congratulations Will
Kelly who will be the Captain in 2011 and also to Bill Alexander who will
take over as President in 2010.
It was great to see over 70
people at the members information evening, I have received some very
positive comments about the evening and the level of information provided.
We will look at running a similar event in the near future.
-------------------------------------------------
Well, as the season draws to a close, there is still an
awful lot to report.
Congratulations to Ashton ladies for their performance
in the Charity Cup at Penwortham this year. Four of our ladies won the best
4 team event, so congratulations to Barbara Wilkinson, Jeanette Smith,
Maggie Ayers and Adrienne Bennett on their achievement. Congratulations to
the whole team for coming second overall (we narrowly missed it by 1
point!), also well done to Barbara for coming second in the individual
Charity Cup.
I'd like to express my thanks to everyone who supported
the charity fayre on the 5th September. The day was a huge success and
raised over £350 for St Catherine's Hospice. A huge thankyou to those
of you who manned stalls, baked cakes and put in such a lot of effort.
Thursday 24th September was the close of the ladies
season, with the traditional sides match competition. I am delighted to say
that Lady Captain's team beat Lady Vice Captain's team. (Better luck next
year Jill!!).
Finally, I am delighted to report that Kate May will be
taking over as Lady President for 2010-2011 and Jenny Clydesdale with be
the next Lady Vice Captain. Many congratulations to Jenny and Kate.

Jenny Clydesdale and Kate May
Joanne Startin, Lady
Captain.
GOLF COURSE
Well Autumn has arrived and the
season is nearly over and what a strange one weather wise it has been - a
decent June, awful July with 6” of rain, a bad back end of August and
early September then dry for three weeks - “we are now
watering”!!!
The course in general from what I can gather has been in decent
condition apart from the odd comment on “greens speed” and the
usual comments on “bunkers”. We hope to rectify this over the
coming months.
It is a very busy time on the course at present with Autumn maintenance
underway we have verti-drained the greens a few weeks ago this is to
improve drainage and aeration over the winter months and we are currently
scarifying the greens and topdressing. This will be followed by hollow
coring next week. All these processes will help reduce thatch levels in the
greens and improve the surface and structure as well as drainage. We will
also be verti-draining some wet spots on the course and some fairways,
followed by work on tees ie seeding and topdressing.
Finally as winter approaches a number of jobs have been pencilled in
over the coming months to hopefully improve the course. As mentioned in the
members meeting we intend to look at draining the side of the 6th green
using a contractor in approximately two weeks time. Also on the agenda a
number of bunkers are to be dug out and reshaped and sanded. This will be
an ongoing program every back end.
Other jobs to be included are clearance work, pathway tidying and also
the removal of some Poplar trees at the side of the 7th green. These have
caused problems with drainage and also become dangerous, they will be
replaced by other species.
That concludes my small report so fingers crossed we will have a
reasonable back end and not too much rain so we can get on with preparing
the course and you can enjoy your golf.
