Messages from our 2019 Captains

Lady Captain - Helen Smith

Hi my name is Helen Smith and I am Ashton & Lea's Lady Captain for 2019.
I'm married to Paul Smith who has been a member for over 25 years and I joined the club and ladies section in 2011.  I was late getting into golf, only starting playing when the kids had finally left home and I suddenly had free time!  I never thought that golf would be something that would interest me but after constantly beating Paul on the Nintendo Wii golf game (don't tell him I told you that!) I thought this is easy I'll give the real thing a go!
I soon found out the real thing is not that easy though I have had some successes winning the ladies singles, ladies doubles with my partner Jane Cooper as well as getting Paul's name on a board comp finally!!!!!!  Truth in the saying 'behind every great man there is a greater woman'

I'm looking forward to a great year working with my partner in crime representing the men Captain Bernard Hargreaves.........

Captain - Bernard Hargreaves

Thanks Helen I'm Bernard Hargreaves I've been a member since Adam was a lad (1992). I won a few comps in my early years but nothing recently.
I've played in the Sunday morning winter league every year since I joined with mixed results ,but thoroughly enjoyed it. (Even the frosty mornings)
I've known Helen and Paul for many years having worked with Paul at LCC until I retired in 2010.(I know I can't believe I'm that old either !)
2nd round of Captains day is on the 27th July so following the prize presentation I have arranged an ABBA tribute and DJ Aine . I hope you will make an effort to support me and make it a great night.
I am also having a Captains charity night on the 24th August a wine (and cheese) tasting evening with Mick Gould -- I have been to several of these evenings and I can say they're definitely not to be missed -- even if you're not that keen on wine !!
I am looking forward to working with Helen this year and in the process raise plenty of money for our charity.
Our Charity

We have nominated Alzheimers Society as our chosen charity. This disease affects over 850,000 people a year in Britian.  This cause means a lot to me personally as both my mother and mother-in-law suffered from Alzheimers and Vascular Dementia so I am keen to raise as much money as we can.

We will be holding a number of fundraing events throught the year which I hope you will all support us in.  One constant reminder of our cause is the 3 charity bunkers on the 11th hole, just one example of the quirky sense of humour Bernard and I share!
Bernard and I will be taking on a 'Wheelly Big challenge' on Sunday 4th August walking 21 miles around Preston's Guild Wheel.  We would welcome support from as many people as possible either walking, running or riding a bike on the day and if you can get some sponsorship for yourselves or for us that would be greatly appreciated.
Let Helen or Bernard know if you are doing the challenge with them and they can get you a t-shirt for the day.
Sponsorship forms are available in the Pro Shop.
The really great things that visitors say about our golf club is how welcoming and friendly everyone is.

Now we have the fantastic driving range facility we hope that it will attract many more members.
It has already attracted Lora Fairclough to come and do lessons and coaching clinics so hopefully that will encourage more new ladies.
