Ashton and Lea Golf Club Remembers

The talk “Returned to the Regiment” describes the life story of Lt. Col. Sir Gilbert Mackereth M.C., who commenced his war service in the First World War as a Private in the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

By the end of the war, he had risen to be Lieutenant-Colonel in command of the 17th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers.

The talk also covered his life post WW1; the exhumation of his remains from his threatened grave in Spain, and the return to Bury of his cremated remains and medals.

A raffle was held, with the winner taking home a 'There But Not There Tommy' statue donated by Lady Captain.

Proceeds were shared between the Lancashire Fusiliers museum and Lady Captain's charity.
