It was a fantastic showing for two Ashton & Lea members at the recent Scottish Pairs Open Championships, with Chris and Bernard Hayes narrowly missing out on top spot.
The pair recorded an impressive gross score of 12 under par across five rounds, eventually finishing in second place overall. Chris was in superb form, carding an outstanding 21 birdies throughout the competition and leading the charge for the team. Proud father Bernard contributed six birdies of his own, though a couple overlapped with his son’s efforts.
Reflecting on the week, Bernard said:
“It was a wonderful experience to compete together. I couldn’t be prouder of Chris – his consistency and composure were outstanding, and to finish second in such a strong field is something we will both treasure.”
Also flying the flag for Ashton & Lea were Ian Carroll and John Bryce, who finished a very respectable 17th place in a field of nearly 200 pairs. Their consistency paid off with a daily net prize win, adding to the club’s successes at the tournament.
Although the historic St Andrews was not among the host courses this year, Ashton & Lea’s representatives more than made their mark in Scotland, showcasing both quality and camaraderie on the big stage.
