On Tuesday 16th September, Ashton & Lea Golf Club had the privilege of hosting this year’s Fylde League Presidents Day. Despite heavy rain on the days either side, we were fortunate to enjoy excellent playing conditions throughout the competition.
Thanks to the recent course maintenance, the course was presented in outstanding condition and provided a fitting stage for the event. A field of 90 players, alongside our team of 10, competed in a four-ball better-ball under Stableford rules, with prizes for both the overall team trophy and the top five combined pairs.
In a closely contested competition, Lancaster secured the team trophy, while Ashton & Lea, captained by Seniors Captain Jimmy Kay, achieved a commendable 4th place finish. In the pairs competition, Michael Bennett and Mark Tennant of Green Drive took top honours, with our own Nigel Westgarth and Neil Chambers finishing strongly in 4th place.
We were also delighted to welcome nine Captains from Fylde clubs, with Neil Graham kindly standing in for our Captain, Frank Leach, who was away on a well-earned holiday.
Following the event, Trevor Day, Secretary of the Fylde League, sent a note of thanks which highlighted the tremendous effort by everyone involved:
“Kevin, Carl and Jimmy – many thanks for all the effort you made to ensure Presidents Day was a great success. Everything went smoothly due to your organisation and the efforts of those around you – the Pro Staff, the Starter, the Marshall, the Catering and Bar Staff and the Greenkeepers.
I hope future events will run as smoothly. My thanks also go to the Ashton & Lea Committee for allowing us to use the facilities. I am sure the free coffee was very much appreciated by all those who competed. Once again, well done to you all.”
