Ladies Dignatories & Committee Members

The ladies section is run by the following dignatories and committee members who meet regularly to discuss matters concerning the Ladies section, including upcoming competitions, handicaps, fundraising events and fun & social events. They are represented on the main Board of Directors by the current Lady Captain and any other elected directors from the ladies section.

The current ladies dignatories (Lady Captain [LC], Past Lady Captain [Past LC], Lady Vice Captain [LVC] and Lady President [LP]) and the members of the various ladies committees are shown below along with some information about them and what they do.

Lady Captain

The Lady Captain at Ashton & Lea Golf Club holds a special and respected position, representing the ladies' section and playing a key part in the life of the club. Elected annually by the ladies’ section, the Lady Captain provides leadership, promotes camaraderie, and ensures a warm welcome is extended to both members and visitors alike.

Throughout the year, the Lady Captain helps coordinate and support a variety of competitions, social events, and charity initiatives, encouraging participation at all levels of ability. She works closely with the Ladies' Committee and club management to ensure the smooth running of the ladies’ golfing calendar, as well as representing the club at interclub events and county functions.

Beyond her responsibilities on the course, the Lady Captain plays a vital role in building community spirit within the club. Whether supporting new members through introductory events or helping raise funds for her chosen charity, she serves as a visible and approachable figure of support and encouragement.

At Ashton & Lea, we take great pride in our friendly and inclusive atmosphere, and the Lady Captain plays a key part in maintaining that spirit, helping make our club a place where everyone feels at home.


Lady Vice Captain

The Lady Vice Captain at Ashton & Lea Golf Club plays a supportive and active role within the ladies' section, working closely alongside the Lady Captain throughout the year. She assists in organising competitions, social events, and club activities, helping to ensure everything runs smoothly.

As part of the leadership team, the Lady Vice Captain is also preparing to take on the role of Lady Captain in the following year. Her involvement provides continuity and helps maintain the welcoming, inclusive spirit that defines our club.

Whether on the course or around the clubhouse, the Lady Vice Captain is a friendly and approachable presence, always ready to support members and contribute to the success of the ladies’ section.

Past Lady Captain

Fiona Mairs

The Past Lady Captain at Ashton & Lea Golf Club continues to play an important role within the ladies' section, offering guidance and support based on her experience in the role. She provides continuity within the leadership team and often assists with events, decision-making, and mentoring newer members.

As a trusted advisor to both the Lady Captain and Lady Vice Captain, the Past Lady Captain helps ensure a smooth transition from year to year. Her continued involvement reflects the strong sense of community and tradition at the heart of our club.

Her presence is a reminder of the valued contributions made by those who have served before, helping shape the friendly and welcoming environment Ashton & Lea is known for.

Lady President

Shirley Piggot

The Lady President at Ashton & Lea Golf Club holds an honorary and respected position within the ladies' section. Serving a term of between two and three years, the Lady President is someone who has previously held the role of Lady Captain and is elected in recognition of her experience, dedication, and continued commitment to the club.

Acting as a figure of support and encouragement, the Lady President plays a key part in upholding the values and traditions of the club. While not directly involved in day-to-day organisation, she is often present at major events, offering guidance, representing the section with pride, and helping to maintain a strong sense of community.

Her role is both symbolic and supportive, recognising past service while continuing to contribute to the club’s future.


Ladies Secretary 

Sue Mercer

The Ladies' Secretary plays a key administrative role in supporting the smooth running of the ladies' section at Ashton & Lea Golf Club. Working closely with the Lady Captain and the committee, she helps coordinate competitions, manage communications, and keep everything well organised behind the scenes.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Preparing agendas and taking minutes at ladies' section meetings
  • Communicating important updates to members
  • Liaising with the club office and other sections where needed
  • Assisting with the organisation of competitions and events
  • Keeping records and documentation up to date

The Ladies' Secretary is a vital part of the team, helping ensure that everything runs efficiently and that members stay informed and engaged.

Handicaps Committee

The Ladies’ Handicap Committee plays a central role in overseeing the competitive golfing structure for women at Ashton & Lea Golf Club. Working closely with the Lady Captain and Ladies' Committee, they ensure that competitions are fair, inclusive, and aligned with national handicap guidelines.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing weekly women’s competitions
  • Organising honour board events
  • Coordinating interclub competitions
  • Planning and delivering the Women’s Gala, Charity, and Open Days
  • Setting the syllabus and playing conditions for women’s golf within the club
  • Ensuring the integrity of the handicap system and maintaining accurate player records

This committee helps create a structured and supportive environment for women’s golf, promoting fair play, development, and participation across all levels.

External Competitions
and Opens


Jaqueline Bennett

The External Competitions and Opens team at Ashton & Lea Golf Club is responsible for organising and promoting our open events, as well as managing the club's involvement in external competitions. Their role helps showcase the club to visiting players and ensures our members have opportunities to compete beyond internal fixtures.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Organising and delivering Women’s Open competitions held at the club
  • Promoting external events to encourage participation from visiting players
  • Coordinating member entries into county and national competitions
  • Supporting teams and individuals representing the club in external fixtures
  • Ensuring all open events are welcoming, well-managed, and reflect the club’s standards

This team plays an important role in raising the profile of Ashton & Lea Golf Club and providing competitive opportunities for our members at every level.

Treasurer

Jane Cooper

The Ladies’ Treasurer at Ashton & Lea Golf Club is responsible for managing the finances of the ladies' section. Working closely with the Lady Captain and Ladies' Committee, she ensures that funds are handled responsibly and transparently throughout the year.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing the ladies' section bank account
  • Keeping accurate financial records and producing regular reports
  • Handling income and expenditure for events, competitions, and charity fundraising
  • Assisting with budgeting and financial planning for the ladies' section
  • Ensuring funds are allocated appropriately to support members and activities

The Ladies’ Treasurer plays a vital role in maintaining the financial health of the section and supporting the successful delivery of events and initiatives.

Get into Golf Ladies
(GIGLS)
Representative

Angela Haynes

The GIGLS Representative plays a key role in supporting new or returning women into the game through the England Golf "Get Into Golf" programme. As part of the Get Into Golf Ladies Committee, the representative helps create a friendly and welcoming environment to encourage long-term involvement in golf at Ashton & Lea Golf Club.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Implementing and supporting the England Golf programme for women new or returning to golf
  • Welcoming and mentoring beginners throughout their golf journey
  • Helping to organise activities, events, and sessions suited to developing players
  • Creating a supportive pathway into club membership and competitions
  • Encouraging social interaction and building confidence on and off the course

The programme follows a four-stage approach designed to gradually build skills and enjoyment.
